Every year, before the first freeze, the ritual of irrigation “blow out” or “sprinkler winterizing” becomes the priority for all Colorado irrigation systems that are in parts the Colorado where the frost level extends below the depth of the installed piping.
Back Flow
Even if you have drained some water out of the system, the remaining water in the sprinkler lines can freeze, expand and crack the PVC sprinkler piping (rigid, white pipe), usually from fitting to fitting. Polyethylene pipe (flexible, black pipe) is used in many freezing climates. Although polyethylene pipe is more flexible and can expand under pressure, water left inside could freeze and rupture the pipe walls. Freezing water in the sprinkler back flow assembly will damage the internal components and could possibly crack the brass body.
Insulation on the back flow, this does not work and it will still freeze. Insulation on retains the existing heat. This means what ever the temperature of the back flow is at the time the insulation is put on, it will only maintain that temperature for a short period and yes it will still freeze.
